6 April 2016, Bangkok, Thailand
-------------------------------------------
Thailand has 16 national holidays per year, and today, 6 April is Chakri Memorial Day. It celebrates the founding of the Chakri Dynasty back in 1782 by King Rama I. One of his first acts was to establish Krung Thep (Bangkok) as the capitol of Siam (now Thailand), as Ayuttthaya had proven to be too difficult to defend against invaders from the north and west.
-------------------------------------------

The present emperor is Rama IX, the longest reigning monarch in the world. The scope of the holiday has expanded to recognize all the Chakri Dynasty's Kings.
